The German Federal Highway Research Institute initiated the research project "Building Information Modeling (BIM) in road construction with a focus on road maintenance management". Our consortium of 4 university chairs was chosen to realize concepts for a BIM-based data model for the road maintenance management.

The research project consist of the following seven work packages:

WP 1 – International status quo of BIM in road construction

  • Analysis of the international trend of the usage of BIM in road construction and related disciplines like rail, bridge and tunnel construction
  • Consideration and analysis of the OKSTRA standard, regarding its usage in context to BIM

WP 2 – International standardization

  • Strategy of BIM standardization with respect to data exchange, requirements, formats, data management and facility management
  • Analysis of the international activity, considering BIM data exchange formats for the road and infrastructure construction

WP 3 – Requirements for a BIM-based road maintenance management

  • Analysis and documentation of current processes of the road maintenance management
  • Analysis of the current available data and systems of the road maintendance management
  • Opportunities and chances to improve the road maintendance management using BIM
  • Formal specification of BIM use-cases of the road maintenance management
  • Definition of Level of Information for the before mentioned use-cases

WP 4 – BIM data model for the maintenance management

  • Specification of relvant OKSTRA object classes
  • Specifcation of relevant property-sets for the object classes considering BIM use-cases
  • Implementation of a Model View Definition for the BIM use-cases
  • Prototypical implementation of the new data model
  • Validation of the data model with simple test cases

WP 5 – Evaluation by means of two exemplary projects

  • Definition and aquisition of data of two exemplary projects
  • Realization of the BIM use-cases for the maintenance management for the test projects using the new data model

WP 6 – Formulation proposals for standardization

  • Preparation of formulation proposal for international standardization
  • Compilation of test data for international standardization

WP 7 – Project documentation and results
