The chair team has grown

Angelina Und Daniel

Since April 2021, two new employees, Angelina Aziz and Daniel Napps, have been working at the chair. They told us what they studied and what projects they are working on in a short interview.

Angelina Aziz is from Paderborn and studied architecture at the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences. In her master's degree, she chose Integrated Design with a specialization in Computational Design at the same university. During her studies, she found the interdisciplinary group work and her semester abroad in Florida particularly enriching. Since April, she has been part of the BIMKIT project, which is scheduled to run for three years. The main focus is on the as-built modeling of buildings and infrastructure structures using AI to generate digital twins. In line with the project, her accompanying doctoral thesis will probably focus on object recognition in images using AI.

Daniel Napps from Bochum studied spatial planning at the technical university of Dortmund for his bachelor's and master's degrees. He was particularly enthusiastic about real estate management, which also includes BIM. Since April, he has been part of Research Group 2363, which focuses on the evaluation of building design variants in early design phases based on adaptive detailing strategies. Among other things, the project will examine how the planning process and the creation of the design can be made more efficient by transferring the structures of a similar building to the current one. The project is also scheduled to run for three years.

Three questions for... Angelina and Daniel

What motivates you in your home office routine?

Angelina: I see a lot of advantages in working from home. In my opinion, it makes it easier to find appointments with other colleagues. I also appreciate the flexibility; if the weather is nice, I also like to go for a short walk during my lunch break. Of course, it should be noted that this preventes real contact, which also makes it a little impersonal.

Daniel: I like working in a home office, but it's a bit difficult when you're just starting out. You don't know your colleagues personally and small questions take more time, otherwise you would probably be able to clarify such questions across the desk. I try to give myself some variety by changing my workplace from time to time, within my apartment, and otherwise make the most of my free time.

What would you tell someone who is about to finish school?

Angelina: I would advise giving yourself time and getting information early enough. For my bachelor's degree, for example, I needed an 8-week internship in advance, which I did right after graduating from high school. These are good opportunities to gain insights into practice, even while still at school. Taking a look at the content of studies is also recommended. This also helps to find out whether the idea roughly corresponds to reality. That should be kept in mind.

Daniel: Recently, my tutoring student asked me the same question. I advised him: Choose your studies based on your interests. Only topics that really interest you will motivate you through your undergraduate studies. It is also worthy taking a look at the module handbook in advance. Of course, it is also important what type of learner you are. Above all, studying means taking the initiative, organizing and motivating yourself. You should keep this in mind when making your choice.

Is there something you are very enthusiastic about?

Angelina: I'm very enthusiastic about painting, which also coincides well with my studies in architecture. Especially on Sundays I like to take time for it.

Daniel: Riding a motorcycle, especially when the weather is nice.
