Recently, some from our department visited the RUB Makerspace and got a guided tour. The Makerspace has its rooms in the O-Werk, the old main headquarters of Opel, in Bochum and is in the final preparations of construction.

In 2013, the idea of a creative place where people can try out and experience technology was born. The project was then started in 2016 with the two employees Dirk Hansmeier and Florian Krohm, who are still involved today. In the further course, the rooms of the Makerspace were first located in the UFO in the Unicenter and now in the O-Werk. The RUB Makerspace is part of the Woldfactory Start-UP Center. The aim is to support and advise young founders and those who want to become founders.

On a total of 2000 sqm2 there are various machines, devices, labs, rooms and working areas. The team, which takes care of the projects, the equipment, the construction, the operation and everything else, has grown over time to 16 employees (11 of them part-time). The target groups are students who want to try out their (start-up) ideas, teachers (e.g. for seminars), companies and, in the future, citizens of the Ruhr region. Part of the concept is learning by experience and trying out new products and prototypes. In addition, the opportunity is offered to work together as a team on a project, to learn new things in workshops, to discover interests and to get to know practical learning opportunities.

In the future, this will be made possible by the wide variety of labs, equipment and experts on site. Among others, there is a metal, wood, plastics and ceramics workshop on site, a design lab with 3-D printers in various sizes, a photo and video studio, and VR and AR equipment. In addition, there are machines such as laser cutters, with which wood, acrylic glass, food and many others can be processed, platinum printers, knitting and embroidery machines. Seminar rooms (some equipped with PCs), creative spaces and also space for co-working are also available. The RUB Makerspace offers a lot of opportunities to let off steam creatively and technically.

We are looking forward to the RUB Makerspace offering open afternoons for students and interested people starting this April and are excited about future developments. See you soon!
