Welcome to the team Lukas Guntermann!

Lukas Guntermann

Since September 2024 Lukas Guntermann has been part of the team as a research assistant. In this interview, he talks about his academic career to date, his scientific interests in the field of construction informatics and what inspires him.

From classic civil engineering to digital planning

With a degree in civil engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen, specializing in structural engineering, Lukas not only brings with him in-depth specialist knowledge, but also a great passion for digitalization in construction. During his studies, Lukas discovered his interest in the interface between civil engineering and computer science. "I originally considered studying computer science, but then chose civil engineering - assuming that planning was already completely digital," he says. "It was only during my studies that I realized that this is far from the case. That motivated me to make a change in precisely this area."
This drive ultimately led him to his research focus: the combination of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and sustainability. In particular, he is concerned with the Re-Use of components, a concept that goes beyond pure recycling. The aim is to use BIM models to identify which components can be reused in new projects - an approach that is intended to promote sustainability and resource conservation in construction.

Fascination with current developments

In addition to his research topic, Lukas is also following with great interest how digitalization is developing in construction. He finds the progress in the IFC standard and the role of openBIM particularly exciting. He is also enthusiastic about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) - both in the area of generative AI, which can support planning processes, and in analytical AI, for example for damage detection in buildings. He is also interested in technologies such as extended reality (XR), a topic that he already dealt with intensively in his bachelor's thesis.
"The construction sector can make an enormous contribution to achieving our climate goals," emphasizes Lukas. This is precisely what motivates him to continue to deal with the topics of sustainability and digitization, both in research and in practice.

Insights into his free time

Lukas also has a wide range of interests outside of work. "I have been ballroom dancing for years and I enjoy going to concerts," he says. He is also passionate about tinkering with technology and PC hardware - a hobby that has been with him for a long time.

A wish for the future

Lukas would like more capacity above all to be able to deal even more intensively with the numerous exciting topics in his field of research. However, there is often not enough time to fully pursue all of his ideas and approaches.

We are happy to have Lukas on our team!
