New at the chair: Welcome to the team Yehia Abdelazziz!

Yehia Abdelazziz

Since August 1st, Yehia Abdelazziz has been part of the team as a research assistant. In this interview, he talks about his academic career to date, his scientific interests in the field of construction informatics, and what inspires him.

From civil engineering to digital transformation

With a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Egypt, Yehia brings both solid technical expertise and a strong enthusiasm for technological innovation. “I’ve always been interested in technology,” he says. “When I finished my Bachelor’s, I wanted to travel, but it’s not always easy to do that from Egypt, so I found a Master’s program at the Technical University of Munich, and that opened up opportunities to explore digitalization in civil engineering.”

During his Master’s studies, Yehia developed a growing interest in how digital tools can reshape construction processes. This curiosity led him to his current research focus: the reuse of concrete elements from decommissioned buildings. The goal is not simply to recycle materials, but to dismantle structural components efficiently, transport them, and integrate them into new projects. In this way, Yehia’s work directly contributes to sustainability and resource conservation in the construction sector.

Fascination with current developments

Although still new to the Chair, Yehia is particularly eager to explore the role of artificial intelligence in construction. He sees AI as a transformative force across all disciplines, from generative design tools to intelligent systems that could one day plan and optimize entire buildings. “Just two years ago, many of these AI capabilities seemed impossible. Now they’re becoming reality, and the potential for further progress is astonishing,” he says.

Beyond research

Outside of work, Yehia enjoys swimming and spending time with friends. He is also passionate about programming, a skill he first encountered during his Master’s studies. Starting with C++, he found the challenge stimulating and has since continued to build his coding abilities.

Having only recently moved to Dortmund, Yehia is still exploring the area. So far, he has enjoyed visiting Cologne and Düsseldorf, but here in Bochum, his favorite spot for now is his office — not least because of its excellent view.

A wish for the future

Yehia’s main wish for his time at the Chair is to make a meaningful impact and become an integral part of the team.

We are happy to have Yehia on our team!
