Bridge Inspect - Structural Inspection of Bridges using Mixed Reality and Artificial Intelligence

The support of inspection tasks for bridge construction projects has been the focus of many research projects over the last few years. As part of this project, available technology is combined with our own work to enable praxis-oriented support of structural analysts using augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) Focus is put on the visual inspection task, as defined in DIN 1076. The system developed in this project shall automatically tag visible damages to be reviewed by the user. The following challenges are to be tackled:

  • AI processes for damage recognition and analyzation, which is to be performed in real-time on a mobile AR system.
  • User interaction concepts for outdoor AR systems under various operationg conditions for additional data entry.
  • Exact localization of mobile AR systems for linking identified damages and their visual representation for later inspections.
  • Improvement of AI models through inclusion of data acquired during the inspection process.
  • Consideration of privacy and data protection policies in the concept and realization of a demonstrator.
